Stress and mistakes are inevitable. It\u2019s a handy digital service meant to help you keep your tax obligations met \u2013 you can look at your balances due, your payment history, make electronic payments, and a lot more.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color:white;\">In the IRS\u2019s opinion, the BTA is the way to go for every business owner. But if you\u2019ve read many (or even a few) of my writings, you already know \u2013 there\u2019s never a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color:white;\">So, if you need tax help with a <i>personal<\/i> touch, you know a reliable Southeastern FL tax pro you can call to help you out (ahem).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019ve been keeping up with my writings lately, you\u2019re probably pretty familiar with the end-of-year tax moves you should be making. Because up until now, the 2024 finish line was the issue at large.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s still true \u2013 but it\u2019s now time to start thinking ahead to a tax-smarter 2025 (and what credits you can take advantage of \u2013 which of course, I\u2019ll be your guide to).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today I\u2019m sharing more about the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC). This one is a strong potential for you if you have a passion for making an impact bigger than yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-huge\"><strong>Is the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Right For Your Southeastern FL Business?<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span class=\"text-small\"><i>\u201cSomeone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.\u201d \u2013 Warren Buffett<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Running a business is about more than cash flow and bottom lines, as you well know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Beyond financial success, one of the things that makes running your&nbsp;Miami Metropolitan&nbsp;business worthwhile is the way you invest in others \u2013 especially in those you hire. <strong>You\u2019re uniquely positioned to make a lasting impact on their careers and their lives.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">And, the government has deductions and credits that you can sometimes claim for that kind of care, such as The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) \u2013 which I want to talk more about today \u2013 along with some others (which I\u2019ll discuss more in the coming months).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">As far as the WOTC goes, if you bring individuals onto your team who typically struggle to get jobs \u2013 like veterans, ex-felons, or recipients of government assistance, as examples \u2013 the IRS offers you a little kickback in your tax burden.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">But of course, hiring these individuals is about so much more than the tax boost. The REAL benefit is seeing their lives changed for the better as you offer them growth opportunities that others won\u2019t. <i><strong>It\u2019s about how your business can make an impact that <u>really<\/u> <u>lasts<\/u>.<\/strong><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>What is the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC)?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/small-businesses-self-employed\/work-opportunity-tax-credit#:~:text=After%20the%20required%20certification%20is,Form%205884%20(with%20instructions)\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">The WOTC&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">is a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for hiring individuals from certain groups that the IRS specifies. As of right now, the credit is good for the taking until the end of 2025 (although the historical pattern of Congress has been to extend it when it\u2019s close to expiring).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">How much you\u2019ll get from the credit varies \u2013 it depends on the target group of the employee, their qualified wages, and how many hours they work (and is calculated by a percentage determined by these factors).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">It ranges from a 1.2k boost for summer youth employees to 9.6k for veterans with a service-related disability who are unemployed for 6+ months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>Who are the target groups?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">To get the credit, consider hiring individuals who fall into these categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Veterans<\/u><\/i> receiving government assistance or with service-connected disabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Long-term unemployed<\/u><\/i> (for 27 weeks or longer and receiving unemployment benefits).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Recipients of certain government programs&nbsp;<\/u><\/i>such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Designated community residents<\/u><\/i> aged 18-39 living in Empowerment Zones or Rural Renewal Counties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Vocational rehabilitation referrals<\/u><\/i> in vocational rehabilitation programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Ex-felons<\/u><\/i> hired within a year after conviction or release from prison.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i><u>Summer youth employees<\/u>&nbsp;<\/i>living in Empowerment Zones.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>So, here\u2019s what you need to do to get the Work Opportunity Tax Credit next year<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> Find qualified applicants. Your State Workforce Agency (SWA) or local unemployment office can typically help with this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>2.&nbsp;<\/strong>Complete pre-screening requirements. Make sure to complete&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-8850\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Form 8850<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"> (which is the pre-screening request for the WOTC credit) and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/sites\/dolgov\/files\/ETA\/wotc\/pdfs\/ETA-FORM-9061-(ENGLISH).pdf\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">ETA 9061<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"> within 28 days of their start date. (Or, if the applicant has a conditional certification,<\/span><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/sites\/dolgov\/files\/ETA\/wotc\/pdfs\/ETA-Form-9062.pdf\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">ETA Form 9062<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>3.&nbsp;<\/strong>Track the employee\u2019s hours and wages. To qualify for the WOTC, they must clock at least 120 hours in their first year of employment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>4.&nbsp;<\/strong>Do the math and claim the credit. Calculate the percentage of first-year wages you can claim with&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-5884\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Form 5884<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">, then transfer that amount to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-3800\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Form 3800<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">, and attach <i>both<\/i> to your federal income tax return (hey, I never said the paperwork would be easy).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">And of course, you\u2019ll need to practice good recordkeeping habits throughout the process (to help keep potential audits at bay): Keep track of any and all submitted forms, employee certifications, and records of wages and hours worked.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>Is the credit right for YOU?<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">But before making plans to take advantage of the WOTC, here are a few important questions to ask yourself:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i>What\u2019s your current tax liability?<\/i> The Work Opportunity Tax Credit is nonrefundable \u2013 so if the credit ends up being more than your income tax bill, you won\u2019t see that money back (or you\u2019ll need to rely on carrybacks or carryforwards to not lose it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i>Do you have the bandwidth?<\/i> The paperwork for the WOTC process is demanding (of course, my team and I are happy to help ease that burden for you).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><i>Could other credits be more advantageous?<\/i> Wages used to calculate the WOTC can\u2019t be used for other tax credits (like the Employee Retention Credit or the Paid Family and Medical Leave Credit, for example), so this credit could actually hold you back from getting other (potentially better) benefits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">If you conclude the WOTC <i>isn\u2019t<\/i> right for you, don\u2019t fret \u2013 there are many other tax credits to consider for 2025 (which I\u2019ll be clueing you in on in the coming weeks and months). You can also consider\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><u>The Small Business Tax Healthcare Credit:<\/u> Providing health insurance to your employees = up to 50 percent of the premiums paid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><u>Credit for Small Employer Pension Plan Startup Costs:<\/u> Great for you as a business owner looking to inspire retirement savings habits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><u>Research and Development (R&amp;D) Tax Credit:<\/u> If you\u2019ve got a curious streak, use it to help offset your income tax liability.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><u>Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) Clean Energy Credits:<\/u> Going green could be a tax-savvy move for you in 2025.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">\u2026and many others.
