But maybe this is a hard season for you \u2013 you\u2019re stressed from being stretched thin financially, or you\u2019re missing a loved one who is no longer near.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\">Like <i>any&nbsp;<\/i>other external event, the holidays themselves can\u2019t guarantee joy (no matter what the songs promise you). <strong>Because joy, ultimately, isn\u2019t about outward circumstances. It\u2019s more about our inward reality \u2013 our <\/strong><i><strong>mindset.<\/strong><\/i><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\">Now, think about how this concept applies to your team: How can mindset improve your Southeastern FL employees\u2019 happiness?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/12\/09\/harvard-researchers-people-who-are-happiest-with-their-jobs-do-this-one-thing.html\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:#1155CC;\">Harvard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\"> is pretty sure they\u2019ve got it figured out: <i>Prioritize progress more than perfection and stop chasing the illusory dream job.<\/i>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\">A neat formula, right? Of course, emotions can\u2019t easily be boiled down to formulas (even if they are Harvard-discovered). Employee happiness isn\u2019t a year-round guarantee, but it can be one of your priorities as you build your team culture this next year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\">Because what Harvard\u2019s research <i>does<\/i> confirm is that employee happiness isn\u2019t contingent on money. It rests on them achieving small wins in their position \u2013 which is something you\u2019re uniquely qualified to catalyze. You see their needs and respond.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\">Now, to narrow this concept a bit: One specific group of employees you can impact exceptionally as you do this is your disabled employees. But there\u2019s a unique challenge here: Before you can respond to their needs, you have to understand what their needs are.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in;\"><span style=\"background-color:white;color:black;\">So, we need to backtrack: What <i>are<\/i> the needs of your disabled employees?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-huge\"><strong>What Disabled Employees Wish Their Southeastern FL Bosses Knew<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span class=\"text-small\"><i>\u201cThere is no greater disability in society than the inability to see a person as more.\u201d Robert M. Hensel<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">If you have disabled employees, of course, you try to put yourself in their shoes as much as you can. But your understanding (and empathy) is limited.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">And if their needs aren\u2019t truly getting met, they may or may not want to speak up about it. So, here are a few changes you can make to better serve them that you might not have previously thought of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>You can serve your disabled employees by\u2026starting the conversation.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">We\u2019ve all experienced how intimidating it can be to advocate for ourselves, particularly in the workplace. So if you don\u2019t take the initiative to communicate, your disabled employees might not realize the accommodations available to them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">As the leader of your business, it\u2019s on YOU to ask how they\u2019re doing and what you can do to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Make sure to initiate conversations with your disabled employees the <i>right<\/i> way \u2013 use the same formality you would with any other adult, and let <i>them<\/i> bring up their disability.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>You can serve your disabled employees by\u2026fixing misconceptions.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">More than likely, disability misconceptions exist within your business (and hurt your disabled employees on a day-to-day basis). It can look like thoughts and attitudes in this vein:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">\u201cDisabled employees can only handle small, menial tasks.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">\u201cThey need constant hand-holding while they work.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">\u201cThey need to be protected from any difficulty or negative feedback.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">\u201cEmployees with disabilities disrupt the work environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">In reality, they\u2019re just people who face unique daily challenges. This doesn\u2019t make them any less valuable (or competent) in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">How do you eradicate these misconceptions? Educate yourself. And offer your team training materials on how to interact with <i>and<\/i> work with colleagues with disabilities (and attack conscious and unconscious biases especially hard).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"><strong>You can serve your disabled employees by\u2026offering <\/strong><i><strong>ongoing<\/strong><\/i><strong> support.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Offering support to your disabled employees is <i>not<\/i> a one-and-done ordeal. Offering support can look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&#8211; Installing ramps, lifts, or handrails.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&#8211; Widening doorways and hallways.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&#8211; Marking parking spaces (and curb cuts).&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&#8211; Installing and upkeeping technologies (for example: speech-to-text software or screen readers).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&#8211; Scheduling regular one-on-one meetings to discuss how their needs are being met.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">&#8211; Offering access to counseling services or Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">This list is by no means exhaustive \u2013 make sure to do your own research.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Now, I would be failing you if I didn\u2019t tell you about the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/small-businesses-self-employed\/tax-benefits-for-businesses-who-have-employees-with-disabilities\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">tax incentives available here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"> to help balance out the costs of these structural adjustments: The <strong>Disabled Access Credit<\/strong> and the <strong>Architectural Barrier Removal Tax Deduction<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">To qualify for the <strong>Disabled Access Credit<\/strong>, your business must have either grossed less than 1 million in the previous tax year OR employed 30 or fewer full-time employees.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">If eligible, you can claim this credit by filing&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-8826\"><span style=\"color:#1155CC;font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Form 8826<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\"> with your federal income tax return. The credit equals 50 percent of the amount spent on qualified accessibility improvements that exceed 250 but do not exceed 10.25k, resulting in a maximum credit of 5k.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Qualified expenses might include costs incurred to remove barriers, provide accessible communication formats, or modify equipment to accommodate individuals with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia, serif;\">Or, you can use the <strong>Architectural Barrier Removal Tax Deduction<\/strong> (which, in my opinion, is the more fun option \u2013 you get to demolish things). Any size business qualifies for this one. You can claim a deduction of up to 15k per year for qualified barrier removal expenses on your income tax return (but only in the year the expenses were incurred). This includes modifications like constructing ramps, widening doorways, and installing tactile signs or visual alarms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color:white;color:#0D0D0D;\">Is your Miami Metropolitan business truly accommodating? Are you serving your disabled employees the way that THEY need you to? You may not have thought to ask yourself these questions before \u2013 it\u2019s never too late to start.
