Choosing a Small Business Accountant – Key Things to Look For

July 11, 2022 by heyer-blog

Choosing a small business accountant is a big decision. You want someone who is going to take care of your business and help grow it. Here are some key things you should look for when choosing a small business accountant:

Look for a firm that specializes in your industry

If you are into law or dental practices, for example, then it makes sense to find an accountant with experience in those fields. This will help them understand your needs and take the best approach for your business.

Find someone who can talk about their experience with similar businesses like yours

If they have worked with other companies like yours, then they will already know what works and what doesn’t work in terms of accounting systems and reporting methods. They will also be able to show you how they can work better for your business than it would for someone else’s firm or even another industry altogether.

Ask about their experience with small businesses like yours

Check how they handle issues like payroll taxes and health insurance costs. These issues can be complex and overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re doing, so it’s important to find someone who has dealt with them before so that you don’t have to learn on the job!

Check their location

Consider where you live and where your accountant lives. If they’re too far away, they’ll be harder to get in touch with if something goes wrong – or hard to meet up with in person if needed. It’s also important that they have an office near your location so that they can easily visit you if necessary (for instance, for an audit).

Personality and communication skills

Accountants are expected to be organized, detail-oriented and efficient – but they should also be friendly and approachable when clients need help or advice about their taxes or other financial issues. A good accountant should be able to explain things clearly so that even those without accounting backgrounds can understand what’s going on with their finances.

Check if they provide value-add services

Look for a firm that offers services like bookkeeping and payroll services at an affordable price point that fits within your budget.

Accountants don’t always offer all the same services, so if there’s something specific you need (like payroll), make sure they offer it before signing up with them — otherwise, they might end up costing more than they’re worth! If they offer multiple services in one package (like bookkeeping or tax preparation), compare the prices of each service so that you know what you’re getting for what price tag.

Check their availability

If you have any questions about your accounting or payroll tax returns, it’s important that you can get hold of your accountant quickly and easily so they can help solve any issues as soon as possible before they become more serious problems for your business.
